Slayer – Repentless

Slayer – Repentless

My awesome Rock and Roll Queen gave me an Amazon gift card on Valentine’s so I could buy me some CDs. I ended up with 8 CDs, one album, and one dvd. The rest to follow tomorrow.

This cd was a no brainer because A) I love me some fuckin’ Slayer, B) I love the very idea of Slayer and all it represents on a Rock and Roll level, and C) I love that new song Repentless. This includes a bonus DVD of them live at the Wacken festival in 2014 and a documentary of the making of the new record. The sleeve unfolds into an upside down cross with crazy images on each square that flow into the next. Both sides make a different one.

Pictures straight/Gut crooked

I got all the photos rotated straight (I think). They are straight on my iPad so that’s good enough for me…..even though, my brain doesn’t work like that. If they aren’t right on a pc it will drive me nuts till I figure the glitch out. But, for now I’m happy with it. My gut though has felt better days. Just now, I finally got some relief from a gut that hurts so no sad gut pain story tonight. Tomorrow I’m looking forward to my first ever yoga lesson that will hopefully make my morning pain and stiffness better. I want tomorrow to be a good music day. Blast some shit out of this house both inside and out. I am going to try the ‘all zone’ feature on the new amp which will utilize 13 speakers at once and blast everyone in a 2 block radius some motherfuckin punk rock. I think some US Bombs, some Hunns, some Bad Brains, Slayer, and maybe some Circle Jerks would kick it off good. Sunday I’m gonna take my honey out for a little day trip iPod relaxation and love.

The Decline of Western Civilization LP

The Decline of Western Civilization LP

Original release LP from 1980. Great movie on the LA punk scene featuring the Germs, Circle Jerks, Black Flag, X, Fear and more. Great soundtrack of gritty LA punk. Love the packaging. We need this movie in our library of media. Now you can get all three of the “Decline of Western Civilizatin” movies. I’ve seen this one and the Metal Years but not the third one which I hear is kind of a downer that is about the LA homeless punk scene.

Cirith Ungol – Frost and Fire

Cirith Ungol – Frost and Fire

Today on my way out I grabbed two CDs for the road and this was one. I had re-discovered this band about a year ago listening to old mix tapes I had made in the 90’s. The song was “I’m Alive” and when I heard it I was in amazement of the vocals, music and feel of the song, but I couldn’t remember who it was. After a couple of days I finally tracked the band name down. How did I come about putting this amazing song on a cassette in 1994? I decided I must have discovered it from a Metal Blade sampler at the time.

The song “I’m Alive” has great lyrics, crunchy guitars that rip and are epic and just an overall great listen. Today I listened to the Frost and Fire cd start to finish. Very cool. There is a guitar only track half way through that seems like it doesn’t belong on the cd as it begins slow acoustic almost amateurish basement/bedroom recording but it grows into a monster but holds that lo fi quality to it all the while.  The band is known for its sword and sorcery style lyrics and style but this, their debut is closer to a hybrid of 70’s hard rock and metal.

The title track is epic in one sense but all Rock and has a catch to it. The whole record is good. These guys were a little ahead of their time. The cd ends with “Cirith Ungol” played live.

When I am gone someday, add this to my ‘play on my behalf’ playlist.

Oblvians – Sympathy Sessions

Oblvians – Sympathy Sessions

This release consists of two prior ten inch ep’s put out by ‘Sympathy for the record industry’, hence the title. This was a Christmas present from my honey years ago. Best song is “Feel Real Good”. Pure Rock and Roll.

They formed around 1993 and the trio often alternated vocal, guitar and drum duties on both studio recordings and playing live.

Rubáiyát: Elektra’s 40th Anniversary

Rubáiyát: Elektra’s 40th Anniversary

Released in 1990 the concept was for current label artists to cover songs by historical artists on the label. The two disc set has some amazing stuff. My personal favorite is The Havalins’s doing “Bottle of Wine” originally done by Tom Pacton, which I have never heard of Tom or the song but it is a great song. Feel good song. Other standouts are Metallica covering Queen with Stone Cold Crazy, Billy Bragg doing “7&7” by Love, the Pixies doing “Born in Chicago by Paul Butterfield Blues Band. Ok most of the tracks on this release are good and are cool in their own ways. I recommend this cd for any ‘cool music’ collector.

Straight Outta Burbank – The BOMP! 25th Anniversary Collection Introducing Alive!/Total Energy Records

Straight Outta Burbank – The BOMP! 25th Anniversary Collection Introducing Alive!/Total Energy

Bomp digs into its vast vault of Rock and Roll for disc one and some more recent acts from their partner Alive/Total Energy records on disc two. Not a bad track on this comp.

Highlights from the Zero’s, US Bombs, The Weirdos, and the Dead Boys.
